Poem Broadsides

Telling a story in a visual medium

I created 2 designs based on the beautiful written works by Vasiliki Albedo. The 2 poems, "Icarus over Athens" and "The Labyrinth," tell haunting stories that leave a lasting impression on the reader. While the Icarus over Athens design is meant otherwise give off a ghostly feeling, the design for The Labyrinth was meant to feel like a strong pillar.

Design Brief

BRAINSTORM

I explored the ideas of mazes, footprints and paths, as well as shadows, decay, smears, and repetition.

I wanted Icarus over Athens to feel haunted and hollow, while I wanted The Labyrinth to invoke a sense of nostalgia in the viewer.

SKETCHES

I chose a batch of photos that I felt matched the kind of composition I was looking for. I focused my sketches on implementing the subjects into my designs.

These were the images and sketches I ended up moving forward with.
